Our next theme we will explore during homeroom periods is "community": What is a community? What communities are we a part of? What do communities do? Who is in a community? How do they work? What's in our communities?
We began to explore this topic through various books (posted above). One of my favorites is "Dear Primo: A letter to my cousin". This book tells the story of two cousins--one from Mexico, one from the United States---through the letters that they write to each other. In these letters, they describe their communities that they live in, sharing details such as how they get to school, what their traditions are, what foods they eat, and more. As we read, students recorded details from the stories by drawing elements of each community on paper. We shared these with each other at the end of our story. While the two cousins' lives seemed very different, our K's noticed they actually had lots in common! We used this story to reflect on some of the traits of our own communities as well.

Kindergartners spend lots of the day simply playing, exploring, and experimenting with each other and the world around them. Here are some of the highlights from our play time this week!
1. Discovering how to make foam with sand/water. Through trial and errors, K's found that the best foam substance is made using DRY sand and water, not WET sand. Friends collaborated together to construct a tunnel, fill it with water, and harvest their creation. 2. Lots of puzzle play this week! Friends worked together to finish one of the puzzle we have been working on since before break. We also were super interested in a new type of number puzzle where you move pieces in a square to put them in order. Alex solved this! 3. Trains, trains, trains! I brought out a new box of train track equipment for building with, and the K's have gone CRAZY over this. I've seen so much teamwork and innovation as they build a new design each day, create cities/stops around the track, and remind each other to be aware of walking around the train tracks. 4. Experimentation with paint/ice. The K's found lots of different ice pieces outside this week. Some were very smooth, like glass, and others were very rough and melting. We used water colors on the ice and noticed how it stuck to some types of ice and slid right off of others. |
