Students have begun doing art classes in person with Mary! This week students formed tiny people and animals out of clay while in the art room, and in our classroom (due to rain) students painted with natural materials collected from the playground!

In addition to some of our usual writing/reading practice, this week students also engaged in some new activities shown above. On Monday, students "planted" their names by creating flower beds. These currently hang in the window of our classroom! We also went on a letter scavenger hunt around the school, searching for letters found in nature. Next week students will use photos from our hunt to practice spelling.
Students started a super fun science project this week to learn about seed germination and the parts of a plant. Building off of our seed dissection last week, students can now see how the embryo in a seed begins to form a new plant with a little help from the sun and water. Students used a damp paper towel, beans, and a ziplock bag for this activity. Each day we will observe changes in our beans by documenting them in our seed journals!
Today student decorated cups with silly faces, filled them with soil, and planted grass seeds. We're hoping to see our grass grow tall as some "crazy hair" for our creatures so that we can give them a hair cut! The students are waiting with anticipation to see their seeds sprout.
The Kindergartners are always spotting and catching bugs around the courtyard. Recently, we have been finding lots of box elders. Whenever we find a new creature, like a worm or a rolly polly, students wonder about how to create a habitat and community for it. This invention -- the box elder express-- was a new one to our class! Jack and Sevi created this idea and I thought it was super cute and wanted to share it! We did make sure our bug friends made it back to the courtyard safely after their ride.
To celebrate Earth Day, we read "What Does It Mean To Be Green?" and learned about different ways we can help make the Earth healthy, like recycling, turning our lights off, or riding our bikes! Students used paint and tissue paper to design their own Earth models.
